A brief history of the area
Initially called the land 'Rust' (Rest) and 'Werk' (Work) in 1762, Plumstead got its name in 1807 from its new owner Henry Batt, after a district of London. Batt farmed the area for twenty-six years until he died in 1833. After his death, the farm Plumstead was then subdivided and sold off.
