often referred to as 'Die Strand', which used to be the previous name of this town.
A brief history of the area
Strand was established as a holiday and fishing resort in 1714. Before the Strand settlement origination, the area
was known as Mostert's Bay. During the Apartheid era, all non-Caucasian people were removed from the resort
and classified as a 'white-only' area. Descendants of the Cape Malay slaves, who escaped from Cape Town over
a 100 years earlier, were forced to leave and lost their homes, but their mosque still stands today.
