Colesberg is the place where I was born and bred. I love this beautiful town nestling between “klip-koppies”. A town with such a RICH HISTORY. It was founded in 1830 on an abandoned station of the London Missionary Society, and initially named Toverberg after a nearby hill (we know it as Coleskop), it was renamed Colesberg after Sir Galbraith Lowry Cole, then Governor of the Cape Colony during the time 1828 - 1833.
Stone-age hunter-gatherers were the 1st inhabitants and were followed by “trekboere” and missionaries later in the 19th century. During 1814 a mission station was established here and within a short time a 2nd mission station was established nearby. These mission stations attracted lots of San people (we called them bushmen) and the “trekkers” start feeling unsafe and approached the Cape Colonial Government who stepped in and stop the mission work.
Several farms were established by 1822 and the farmers wanted the Government to established a town. The Government granted 15538,8246 ha to the Dutch Reformed Church during January 1830 and Colesberg was established and named after Sir G Lowry Cole. The district of Coleberg was proclaimed during February 1837 and the town became a Municipality in 1840.
Colesberg is well known for excellent farm land, the typical Karoo veld and the koppies are synonym with this beautiful town. In the district you will find huge farms, (for ages in the same families) beautiful farm houses and families making a living from Merinos (wool), Dorpers, Horses and also a small part doing irrigation from the Seekoei-river.
